And the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel, who struck them and chased them as far as Great Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. And they struck them until he left none remaining. (Joshua 11:8)
Mizpah
Years ago, many Christians purchased Mizpah coins. Medallions split jaggedly in half, and shared between good friends who were separated by circumstances. The two coins were a promise that the coin-holders would remain connected, even when apart. Originally, while at Mizpeh and separating, Jacob and Laban made Mizpah promises to each other along those lines. "The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another" (Genesis 31:49).
Perhaps it is no accident that Joshua and the Israelites fought against a horde of Northern Canaanites Kings at the Valley of Mizpeh.
Because God, in giving Israel a surprising impossible victory, proved Himself once again to be bonded with His people. Even without a jagged medallion, God watches over us, is with us, and unites us to Himself.
He did not abandon Joshua, and He does not abandon you.
He did not forget His promises of a Land, and He does not forget His promises of peace to you.
He did not leave the Israelites in terror, and He does not leave you without joy.
And it is not a vague idea, any more than the Battle at the Valley of Mizpah was vague. Jesus is God not abandoning us. Jesus is God keeping His promises. Jesus is God watching, and keeping, and helping, and redeeming, and forgiving, and loving.
